5 tips for learning to dance at home (even if you have never danced before)

Learning to dance at home might sound daunting, but it is easier than you think. You don't need a dance school, a partner, or experience — just a little space and the desire to move. These five tips will help you get started.

1. Start small and short

You don't have to dance for an hour right away. Start with 10 to 15-minute lessons. Short, regular sessions yield results faster than the occasional long one.

2. Choose one style to start with

If you try to learn everything at once, you will quickly become overwhelmed. Choose a style that appeals to you — hip hop, ballroom, or dance fitness — and build your foundation in that.

3. Make space (and move the mirror)

A few square meters is enough. A mirror helps you check your posture, but is not a must.

4. Repeat, repeat, repeat

Dancing is muscle memory. Feel free to play a lesson two or three times until the step comes naturally. That is exactly the advantage of online learning: you set your own pace.

5. Have fun with it

The fastest way to get better is to keep it fun. Put on your favorite music and enjoy every step.
